by Andy Roth in Ask Andy

Rod asked:
Thx Andy, since we never went trico fishing this year, can you explain
to me what it is?
Rod,
The Tricos are a small mayflies. They are one of the major hatches that we enjoy on many of our spring creeks. Although there are many hatches of various insects throughout the year, most of them do not [...]

This Week on the Kinni

Posted on August 31st, 2009 - 10:08 am | Tags: Tricos
by Andy Roth in Stream Reports, Wisconsin (Western)

The recent rains and end of August cool down have pushed the first signals of seasonal change to the forefront. The water temps are as cool as I have seen them for this time of year, most readings have been in the high 50’s this week. The early morning tricos are now the early afternoon [...]

Trico Patterns/Spinners #3

Posted on July 17th, 2009 - 2:07 pm | Tags: Tricos
by Andy Roth in Flies/Fly Tying, Stream Reports, Wisconsin (Western)

Here are the spinner patterns I carry with me. I will carry them in sizes 20-24 although #26 is also a prevalent size. An important note is that the male spinners(black) fall to the water first in the progression of events in a trico spinner fall. The females will follow with almost their entire body [...]

Trico’s-Ready or Not Here They Come-#1

Posted on July 8th, 2009 - 3:07 pm | Tags: Tricos
by Andy Roth in Minnesota (Southeast), Stream Reports, Wisconsin (Western)

The Tricos are the last of the major hatches for the year.
Here are a few things you may want to think about to be ready for this fun and sometimes frustrating hatch.
1. Hone your casting skills, I can’t harp on this enough! Catching fish is directly related to your ability to cast the fly accurately [...]

Tricos Arrive in SE MN

Posted on August 6th, 2008 - 3:08 pm | Tags: Tricos
by Wayne Bartz in Minnesota (Southeast), Stream Reports

The Tricos have finally arrived in SE MN!  It has been a long wait, they are about three weeks later then normal.  I fished upstream of Forestville State Park this morning and even though the conditions weren’t favorable for good Trico fishing, when I arrived at the stream there were fish rising everywhere.  There were [...]

A Big Bowl of Popcorn

Posted on August 4th, 2008 - 8:08 pm | Tags: Tricos
by Andy Roth in Stream Reports, Wisconsin (Western)

Just one kernel. Why did you pick that one kernel out of the bowl and put it in your mouth? There are hundreds to choose from, why did you choose that particular one. Most likely it is just pure chance and that’s that. Trout on Tricos are the same way. There not choosing a particular [...]

All Clear

by Andy Roth in Stream Reports, Wisconsin (Western)

Only about 1/10″ of rain fell yesterday morning, having no effect on the watersheds.Tricos continue to be the strongest game but the fishing seems to be getting slightly stronger after the morning hatch. Beetles and hoppers are making a strong showing in the grasses along the streams. Nymphing has netted a few fish after the hatch. [...]

Good Morning

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 - 9:07 pm | Tags: Tricos
by Andy Roth in Wisconsin (Western)

We Were there at 6:00AM. The Tricos were there at 7:00AM. The fish never showed on the surface. Monday morning the water was fairly off color on the lower stretches of water. I have seen this behavior in trout before, But I have also seen them feed on the surface in dirtier water than on [...]

by Andy Roth in Wisconsin (Western)

Morning:Cool, no Trico’s yet but keep checking streamside spider webs. Try to get out at sunrise(5:30AM) I have seen no other anglers anywhere in these early AM shifts. Take a nap later…….. The stream has had a chance to cool for seven or eight hours. Trout are cold water fishes. Even a cool down of [...]
