There is no way to tell right now but my gut tells me it may be a bit later this year. Everything was early last year.

Andy, I’m curious to hear what the fishing was like on Sat. & Sun. (16-17). I’m trying to figure out how the different weather conditions affect the bite. I fished on Fri. afternoon and evening and had mild success (caught 4, lost 4, and several other strikes) on prince nymph & zebra midge as well as olive woolly bugger in the deep pools. This was a blustery overcast day and about 30 degee barometer. Sat. the barometer dropped some, but the front was solidly in place. Sun. cleared, but barometer was still lower than Fri. My guess is that Sat. was pretty good fishing, but Sun. was challenging because of the clear skies. Can anyone confirm?

I was given reports for all three days, and was out two of them myself. Friday night into Saturday was the snow day. I always try to get out on days of extremes. It just seem to be a plus for the fishing on top of the fact that very few anglers tend to brave the conditions. Wind had switched from the east on Friday to coming out of the West/North west. Days of North winds are probably my least favorite. The North winds seem to have some affect on the fishing here and it is not for the positive, in my experience. Fished East of Ellsworth On Saturday. The fish I caught were tucked into the rocks or holding close to the rocky shoreline drops and slowdowns. You had to hit your marks and drop the fly on their nose. The fish were not moving to get flies. These were fast water fish and I did not have the same luck as you on buggers or deep pools, I tried that without response. Olives hatched on Friday and Sunday, none on Saturday. Casting a dry under these windy conditions was challenging but the water was roughed up by the wind and the fish did not spook even though the water was crystal clear. From reports from others, Sunday was considered an OK fishing day and a better weather day. Water temps have dropped.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackNow to try and time the Black Caddis hatch. I hit it last year on April 20 and 21st and it was a blast.
Thanks Andy. How about that one river in Douglas County?
I would have to make some calls, and my people would take their people to dinner to get the good information.
