These little guys have provided some great dry fly fishing for the last few days. This hatch usually lasts about a week and has come a week early. The CDC pattern in the recent post worked gang busters as well as a #18 Henneryville caddis. Are these bugs still on the water in Southeast MN?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI was down at Beaver Creek Valley State park (Far SE MN) Fri-Sun. There wasn’t much caddis action Friday or Saturday but boy, Sunday blew the doors off. Grey caddis everywhere. I walked up to a spot I knew was really good and at times 3 fish were air-born at once. A parachute Adams even up to size 12 worked great. I’ve seen some pretty fun hatches but nothing beats seeing fish come completely out of the water to get a bouncing caddis. With a soft cast and some stealth almost every well placed cast drew a strike.
Spent the last two days on the Rush River (downstream of 72) and these Caddis were everywhere. Some of the best dry fly fishing I have ever had.
To answer your question directly….”yes.” I fished SE Minnesota Wed-Sun of this past week and Grey Caddis (dry and emerger)were the ticket. However don’t forget that just because some fish are rising on the top doesn’t mean they are all rising. A nice nymph drifting by while a hatch is going on is a nice technique for the bigger fish who hang low. 😉
Yesterday very little caddis action on the lower Kinni. I have never seen blanket hatches of this bug on the lower stretch of this river for some reason.
