Just returned from 3 days along the North Shore to find heavy rain here has all the rivers blown up again. Say good buy to maybe another week of trout fishing. More rain is predicted.

What is a PMD?
I went out on the upper kinni on Saturday and had great luck. Water levels were manageable and clarity was good.
A PMD is a Pale Morning Dun, which is a mayfly that hatches in reasonable conjunction with the picture of the flower with the caption. It is likely that many of the immature(nymphs) for this popular hatch may have gotten washed away with the high water event. I hope not, but the possibilities are high. It is one of my favorite hatches of the year. With the flows of the river spiking at over 2000cfs(about 100 is normal) many of the rocks that they live on will be tumbled and scoured by the high flows.

Are the high waters going to effect the insect hatches? I was out Saturday night as the rain started and I saw quite a few sulphurs, a few Cahills and a cranefly. I hope they still are some nymphs left in the river for a nice hatch when everything calms down.

Without getting too technical, there will always be survivors. The rivers have withstood events like this for eons and have been just fine. The relationship between aquatic insects, anglers and trout feeding activity lies the size of the insect populations. Spotty and sparse hatches will still bring trout to feed, just not in the same magnitude.
I love you always, Billy. Until you pull the same childlike pranks you pulled on Jacob at the North Shore a few years ago. I was sure glad that I was riding shotgun with the “man about the woods” on that trip:)
A local old-timer that I was bitching to about the weather and it’s impact on my fishing once suggested; “if it really bothers you why don’t you just take two-weeks off and then quit”.
My big boat and Dahl. Divers are starting to pull at me ’bout now. Just when I’d been hoping to bend a couple nice new-to-me canes. Dangit.
Choices…I see lots of gas money leaving the house!
