We were both ready this morning, the birds and I. They sat on the wire waiting. They knew that the clouds of bugs should descend from the heavens and enable them to feed their hungry bellies. It was not to be.
Once again, no Tricos this morning. The nymphing however was fantastic and some nice fish were put on the hook of my fly. Today I was on the Rush and not a trico in the house.

What nymps are recommended for this time of year?

The nymphs that have worked best for me during this time period are pheasant tail nymph variations including s.h.p.tails in size #18-20 Red copper Johns in #18-22. Silver or pearl lightening bugs in #18-20 and soft hackle caddis pupa in #16-18. I like to add a red mercury bead to many of these patterns as well. Not sure why but it seems to work.

Pretty fish. The afternoon mayfly hatches have been solid and some of the nicer sized 14-16″ fish are eating the little flies. A little tedious for many but worth the effort for those willing to fish far and fine.
