Rivers are back to good shape. Waters are warming quickly and I expect a full explosion of top water insect activity to begin shortly. Water temps in the Kinni yesterday were already 60 degrees. There has been gray caddis, small BWO mayflies and an abundance of midges in the air during the last few days but not enough activity to really get the fish up. Nymphing has continued to be good with most standard patterns. The Kinni is crystal clear, the Rush is still stained from the snow run-off. The Bridge at Martel on the Rush is being replaced. Watch out for detours in that area. I suspect the work there might yuck up the water at some point so be aware that the river could be churned up at any time this summer because of that work. I am working every day on some river in Pierce County so I apologize if my blog posts may be a bit irregular. You can always shoot me an email if you need more up to date info. I will do my best to answer before my head hits the pillow each night. My guiding calender in May is nearly completely booked. June still has some openings so get them while its still cool out there. I will see you on the river.

2 of us went out on Sunday and had little luck till the end of the day. We started on the North Kinni in the afternoon where we were able to see plenty of trout in the water but couldn’t coax any to take a bite at anything we threw thier way. The water was crystal clear and they seemed to spook very easily even as we walked by. We ventured off the the Rush south of Martell where we found the water to be pretty clear. We hiked a quarter mile or so from where we entered and again saw plentiful trout in the water but couldn’t get a hit. We traveled back to the Kinni and fished the waterfall until 7 at night. My friend caught 4 brook (largest was 13 inches) off pheasant tail nymph. I got one off a hot belly pheasant tail nymph. Although we didn’t catch much we were happy to see trout in the water, a lot of which were large in size.
