Monday was the first day of the trout fishing season in Wisconsin for me and a few friends. Gordon, Randy, Giard and I spent the afternoon on the water looking for the first fish of the season. The conditions were less than perfect and the weekend run-off made the water high and off color. The air temps in the morning were just below freezing and the water had cleared on the edges. Expectations were low but the first fish was touched shortly after the first bug hit the water. Fish were located in the slow shallow edge water or in the deep water behind obstructions and in big pools. Scuds, Hares ears, Caddis larva and Prince nymphs all caught fish.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHey, sounds like it went pretty well for you. I fished the whitewater on Monday the 9th, and conditions were bad, a lot of my great spots were too high of water, not saying the fish werent there just could catch em, i nymphed the whole time bouncing bottom. Closer to town the stream was favoriable (cant spell sorry), yet nothing for fish… What would you suggest doing, a buddy and i are gonna hit it hard this saturday and maybe a dirty water tactic to bring down there. Also do you think with the cold snap, some snow the water levels and clarity have moved slightly back to normal???
thanks!

I am headed out this weekend also. It looks like conditions in the SE are a little worse than in Western Wisconsin. Have not had good source conformation but from the flows and sites, rivers like the Whitewater are still running a little high. Remember the gullies and washes are still full of water and it wont take a whole lot to get them dumping again. Look to deep holes and edges with obstructions with back eddies. Fish slow and set the hook on any disturbance of the indicator, the bite may not be aggressive.
Have fun. Scud’s, Hares ears, Zebra midges and Princes. There could be some top water Midge/small stone action.
Thanks that should help. Hopefully it should be an okay day, we might try a few other stream down there that are open for the current season, just do a few run and gunning on stretches and try a few other streams in SE mn. Well thanks again, love what your doing with the graygoat! (you should totally make a fly called that). Good luck to you tomorrow.
thanks
