What are you fishing with up on the Brule (line weight, fly)?
And, is there any trout season open around LaCrosse now?
Hi Chip
I am fishing with 7 and 8 weight rods between 9’6″ and 11′ long, and 3x and 4x tippet. I like a little longer rod to help with the mending, roll casting and high sticking. Fly selection has been wide and variable. The flies I fish most on the Brule are all insect patterns. Almost never do I fish flashy or gaudy flies. Stone flies of all different sorts from black and brown to golden all tend to be my lead fly in a two nymph dropper rig. The Stone Flies are larger(#4-10) followed at about 12 to 16 inches by a smaller fly of size (#10-14). The smaller flies are soft hackles in gray, brown or peacock with an occasional egg pattern if I’m bored. These are run on an indicator rig with weight and depth constantly being adjusted. If I use split shot for weight, it is pinched on 8 to 12″ above my lead fly. This is only ONE way of doing it. I know many other anglers who have variations of this system or fish completely differently and have success. Believe it or not, I have watched guys with worms out fish the fly guys 5 to 1 a few times this year.
The only trout season I know of after the 15th of the month is in Iowa, which is open all year around.
Thanks Chip
Andy
