We Were there at 6:00AM. The Tricos were there at 7:00AM. The fish never showed on the surface. Monday morning the water was fairly off color on the lower stretches of water. I have seen this behavior in trout before, But I have also seen them feed on the surface in dirtier water than on Monday. Does anyone have a theory on this behavior? Anglers further up stream and also out on Monday, had good surface action in the clearer water. What did we do? We nymphed up a bunch of nice fish. The off color water enabled us some rare summer cover and the fish had their feed bags on if your drift was right. All in all a darn good morning.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackNot sure why this happens but I’ve seen it too. Fished a lower section of a river – very stained. Tricos were all over the place and when they began to fall there was zero activity on the surface. Packed up and headed to an upstream stretch – water was clear and fish were going crazy. Maybe since the fish don’t key in on the emergence of these flies as much, and the water was dirty, the spinner fall wasn’t as visible to them as it is in clearer conditions. Who knows?. It’s still one of my favorite hatches.
just an FYI, the second access point on river ridge road for the lower Kinnie is kinda block by 3 large trees that fell down over the trail. you can squeeze your way through, but i would suggest to park at the first trail till they get the trees cleared. Tricos still coming off size 22 today.

Thanks ebbs81, that’s helpful information. I appreciate the heads-up and I’m sure others do as well. Fly fishing is about allot of things but good information can sure help make the day. Thanks for visiting the site.

Out on Kinni just downstream of dam on Sunday. Trico’s were late coming out and didn’t seem particularly abundant. Even the birds seemed confused – kept flying out and scoping it but then disappearing. I just stood there for a while figuring it would kick in as it has so reliably in past years. When I finally saw a couple fish rising I was able to catch them on a trico spinner. Finally went a’ nymphin’ and had luck with Andy’s Kinni nymph!!
