The northern cold has kept us all prisoners of our little cubes of warmth for the last two months. Forced dry air, no vitamin D, artificial light, shack nasties to say the least. Nothing fishy has inspired me to write. I am ashamed to say I have only tied one fly so far this winter. I need something inspiring to do! It is time to escape into the wild outdoors of the Jackson Preserve on the Kinnickinnic River and suck up not only the warmth of a camp fire laced with buckthorn cut down this summer, but the warmth of the sun and high quality banter. There is much to talk about, so bring a beverage and a weenie to roast or maybe some fixin’s for s’mores. Snow shoes might be good for a walk down to the river or maybe a chair to rest in. Oh and maybe a hand saw, just in case:) Come one, come all!

BURN, BOND and Bask – Saturday January 17th, 12 noon to 4 pm,The Jackson Preserve on the Kinni.
Where: The Jackson Preserve on the Lower Kinni is located on County Road FF, which is the east-west road that parallels the lower Kinni on the South side. It is 3.4 miles west from the juncture with HWY 29 exiting the South side of River Falls. From the Twin Cities- Interstate 94 east; exit at Carmichael Road/Co Rd F and head south. Cross the lower Kinni and take your first left on Co. Rd. FF. Drive for about 2 miles. The preserve is marked by a kiosk, some limestone boulders and a red gate located between two fields. The kiosk location is on the North side of Co. Rd. FF. This is way too many words for directions, it is easy to find.

There are some big, nasty buckthorn trees on Kinni that I’ve been eyeing to cut down for years! I’ve got a strong back, an axe and would love to help out on Saturday.

Good to hear! Not so much cutting on Saturday, more a gathering to drag and burn what we have already cut. No harm in bringing your axe though. There is no doubt many more of these bad boy(and girl) buckthorn will need to fall.

There will be a bit of cutting of the down buckthorn and maybe to cut up some other dry wood. Mostly just a warming bond fire though. I will know more about if we can drive down this week.

Just got this message from Randy Arnold the coordinator for KIAP-TU-WISH. about an event he is having on the upper Kinni as well. I will keep you updated as I get more news.
I am going to be sending out an announcement tomorrow regarding the red cabin brushing and will include a notice about your event as well is you want to give me specifics as to what to say i.e. time, place, where to park, what to bring etc. I am planning my event to run from 9-1:00 and I am guessing it will be after 2:00 before I can break away and stop by your event. The Prairie Enthusiasts are also holding a brushing event this Sat. at the Blueberry Hill site in Bayport.. . . they are some like-minded folks and I can certainly let them know about your gig as well seeing as how they draw quite heavily from Hudson and River Falls residents at their workdays.

Appreciate it.. A great gathering in a great place. Many thanks to those who attended and toiled over the ceremonial fire. I ended up with 24 wholes in my fleece from flying embers. Lesson learned,,,,,again. A special thanks to Scott for bringing me a sample blend of the Native American Kinnickinnic, sooooo smooth. It is only the beginning.
