Today I guided. It was a treat I had not experienced in a while. At 2pm a wall of darkness came over the Northwest. We hooked an awesome last fish on a dry fly and scampered up and out of the lower Kinni before the rain came. And then it came,,,,again, As much as 4″ of rain fell near Baldwin and blew up an almost healed, crystal clear Rush River,,,,again. An inch here, an inch there. poof they are all mud again.

I would like to fish tomorrow, how are the Rush and Kinni looking? Chocolate milk or fishable?
Thanks!
Joshua
I think those rivers will fish tomorrow but will still be off color. I guided Kinni on Monday at 166cfs and we caught fish on both upper and lower. It wasn’t easy or pretty. The river is sitting at 170cfs right now. You will find the water fast moving and the bottom difficult to see and a bit more challenging to navigate. Fish slow downs along shoreline on the far sides of runs you normally fish. Find obstructions where the water slows and seems between fast and slow. Keep moving and find these spots. They are not in all of the normal places and many runs have lost their character due to higher flows. Did not find fish in deep slow water. There is little light penetration and your flies have little scent for the fish to find them. I believe the trout must be able to see the offering in this water to eat it and the edges and medium depth!-2 ft is where the best clarity is. I think I will look at the rush this evening and report back

Thanks Andy!
Hopefully it does not rain again tonight.
Wknd Warrior – exactly what Andy said. I fished the upper Kinni on Thursday 7/3 at 185cfs and found similar results to Andy’s report. I started in faster water and struck out. Then moved to a stretch of slower water, fished woody obstructions near the bank and larger sized flies (i.e. big woolly buggers!) These ingredients were key and salvaged an otherwise marginal day. Good luck and have fun!
Just got back from the Rush; clarity improving slowly (pushing 2ft now), temp 57-59. Lots of big fish pushed up into the riffles and pockets – chowing on caddis like crazy this am! Nothing in the deep slots or pools, though. Very weird.
Thanks for the info guys. I look forward to getting out on the water tomorrow, it has been too long.
I like the way that worked!
