The Last Two Weeks

The last two weeks have been kind of gloomy. Waters are clearing daily and the spotty rain through the period has only dampened anglers and not the spirit of the trout. The afternoons have been a bit more active on the “catching” part of fishing as we are in kind of spring period more than a summer period for activity. Fish have been found on the move a bit and the fast and shallow water has been more productive than the deep pools and deep runs. Do not pass up the skinny water heads of runs and the top edges of fast water drops if you are practicing the dark arts of nymphing, also rock pockets have been good.

I was in the garden and on the chain saw today so the dry fly activity could have picked up. The last few weeks have been spotty for top water fishing. It will come. I know some anglers have found isolated spots of rising fish throughout the last few weeks but my spots have been slow on top.

Nymphing with the standard fare of p. tails soft hackle p. tails, Prince nymphs and hares ears in 16 or smaller. The swing has been effective with wet flies so don,t forget about it you dead drifters.

Last but not least it is time to bring the insect repellent. Ticks have been off the chart this year with the wet weather and lack of heat. The gnats are out in clouds and the horse/black flies are landing any uncovered skin. Bring it, use it, or pay with blood.
