I had heard a rumor from one of my favorite shop owners and then again from a big commercial fly tier. There was a shortage of saddle hackle and that it may continue. Winter and spring orders from many of the commercial hackle herders has been slow in coming or been on back order for a while. I thought he was pulling my Rooster. Then I saw this. http://www.finefeatherheads.com/ It seems this trend has taken the country by storm, and the gals from East to West are leading the charge. They are scooping up hackle as fast as it can be grown and the popular spas and stylists are close behind paying top dollar for the chickens that would normally have gone into fishing flies. Those of you with good supplies, looks like you may finally get a date with a pretty girl.
Cheers

A lot can be said about chicks and rooster, but I will leave that alone in an effort to preserve the integrity of the Gray Goat brand. 😉
However, I will say that in addition to fly tying I also enjoy good pheasant dinner so I throw out a word of caution to the “chicks” in South Dakota who have adopted this new look. I am just happy its feathers and not antlers. 😉
Well Said!
a lady just called our shop looking for xl grizzly saddle hackles! (not for tying)
Hi!, we would like to recommend you our site and check our Feather Extensions, thanks.
Hi Frank
I am not sure if you are just looking for some internet publicity or this was just a computer generated response to the story. Anyhow, a bunch of my customers are looking for some Whiting Farms saddle hackles in Barred Dark Ginger in about a size 16. There is a little kick-ass caddis pattern we have been tying with those hackles and it seems the fly tiers can’t find them anywhere. Would you have a hundred pack for sale?
