Water conditions are improving by the hour. Water on the upper Kinni was fishable today and the lower was improving. The smaller watersheds are generally in better shape than the big ones. The Rush was carrying a lot of water and was stained up, but the edges were clearing. Some would feel comfortable fishing tomorrow and some will wait for conditions to improve on the bigger water. That’s the scoop.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackDrove around to a bunch of areas today with the family, didn’t fish, but if the peak of the run-off is over with, then wow, the waters in the Mid Driftless region look really, really good. I drove past Coon Creek and the Timber Coulee drainage and it was great looking water, even for a run off period. Yes, the waters are high, but totally fishable, safe, and oddly, somewhat clear.
~I fished the DNR’s access area of Bishops Branch near Viroqua/Viola on Saturday during the misty rain scenario and it fished very, very good, all nymphing, though….lot’s of people for such a small creek! There was about 1.5 foot visability, but the fish were on and the water wasn’t that high. The water ached to be fished with a nymph!

The conditions to the North were a bit more variable and we found water clarity from chocolate milk to crystal clear. The main factor on the Rush River was not so much the clarity, it was the water temps. Water temperature was 38 degrees where just a week earlier it was 44. We ended the day on Pine Creek and had a ball with the brookies.
Hit the lower Kinni upstream from the Hwy F bridge on Monday. Water levels have stabilized and cleared. Fishing was steady between 10-1pm. Nymphing with zebra midges & serendipities was the ticket- black or red sizes 20 or smaller… any midge nymphs would have probably worked the way they were hitting. Majority of hits came on the swing or the end of the drift- emerger presentation style. While the midges were swarming when I hit the water at 9:30am, I didn’t see too many risers. If we have some more warm sunny days, I recommend guys get on the water no later than 9am. Additionally, stones were starting to hatch when I left the river around 3:30pm. If the weather continues to be nice they will probably work in the late afternoons.
Thanks for the report Chris. I ran into the stones as well. should be a great next few days…….fishing.
Rush was perfect a little high, a little fast and a little off color just how I like it. Great fishing in the fast water or slow floats in the slack water. I found Brookies in 3 different parking points and some nice healthy Browns that have been eating thier friends. I always see something that makes my day and Tuesday takes it. I heard geese start making noise so with a quick glance I saw what I thought was a skinny black lab about 75 yards bounding down the shore then dive head long into the water. I thought Beaver…no way he was moving that fast , but he was heading my way and making a bow wave in the 2 foot water. He popped his head up about 40 yards and It was an Otter (Big Otter)! He went under again and I watched for him to comeup 100 yards up and down stream…but he was gone! Anyone see an Otter in the El Paso area?

That is cool. You never know when you will see them. I once saw one pull a dead baby raccoon from a swirling back eddy. I was hiding in the weeds and watched for 15 minutes while the otter patiently waited on a log extending into the back eddy for the bloated floating coon to come around again. It took him 3 float byes before he finally sunk his teeth into it and pulled it from the water. Folks tell me that it could have been a mink as well, and that I may have mis-identified the animal, but I saw the critter on a number of outing throughout the year in the same place and most of the time it was swimming. It was amazing! I have seen them on the lower Kinni as well.
Wow, you said mink and the next time out this friendly guy followed me for about 1 hour and 1 mile up stream. He sure was great at fishing food out of the rocks and small pools. This mink was a nice 28″ and would have brought me $50 30 years ago…now it’s just an honor to watch him work.

Oh, and the fishing was a blast in 40+ mph wind. Reminds me of punching the flies in the plains of WY. It’s real fun to skate a BWO downwind and upstream for brookies. Man what a day!
